A few days ago, I wrote about Fast Company’s top 45 social entrepreneurs, and highlighted 10 that stood out for me. Well, this morning, the Independent reports that Centrica (owners of British Gas) are so impressed with one of these social entrepreneur companies (Ceres Power) that they have paid £20m for a 10% stake.
Centrica are mostly excited about Ceres Power’s fuel-cell boilers, and have clearly decided that this technology is an opportunity for them rather than a threat.
I am no expert, but as far as I can understand, fuel-cells convert hydrogen (the fuel) and oxygen (the air) into electrical current, with the only other outputs being heat and water vapour. The Electrical current is created not by burning fuel but by causing a chemical reaction. Which is way cleaner.
For a more detailed explanation of fuel cells, goto Ceres Power’s website.
